Extra unemployment benefits that were a part of the COVID stimulus plan will be coming to an end this month.
Some 25 million Americans can receive up to $600 (per week) on top of the typical max of approximately $300. This has been a lifeline according to some families across the country as staffing has been deeply cut in businesses that have closed or reduced functions.
Congress is currently considering the fifth Coronavirus stimulus plan. There seems to be general agreement on both sides of the isle there is a need for it, and several places where House Republicans and Democrats are willing to compromise to get it through.
There are additional concerns that the high income for the unemployed is encouraging individuals not to return to work. Some proposals have considered a slightly lower unemployment boost – instead of $600 extra per week, potentially $200-$400 per week is being considered.
The next plan is considered to be in the several trillion-dollar ranges.
What do you think? Should the government be spending so much on unemployment?
Gratefully,
